Independent Advocacy

"Working to protect your rights."

Advocacy Tasmania Inc. (ATI) is an independent, non-government organisation that has provided advocacy services across Tasmania to older people, and people with disabilities, since 1990.

In recent years, we have broadened our client groups to include other vulnerable, disadvantaged and stigmatised groups.

The organisation works to protect and promote the rights and interests of its clients. Older people, people with a mental health disorder, people with disabilities and people who use ATOD services, their carers and relatives are provided with a free, statewide, and confidential advocacy service.

ATOD advocacy services now available

A recent review of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) services in Tasmania commissioned by DHHS identified as a key priority the need to develop both Consumer and Carer Participation Programs and Advocacy Services. ATI has received the funding necessary to develop, implement and operate these programs and services.

The ATOD Coordinator and Policy Officer (ATOD and other responsibilities) commenced work in late January. Recruitment has been completed for part time advocates for our Hobart, Devonport and Launceston Offices. The new service commenced at the beginning of May 2010.

AAG Participation survey is now open

As part of the current Disability Reform Process, Advocacy Tasmania and Speak Out are supporting people with disabilities to have a say in their local Area Advisory Groups. If you are interested in becoming involved by receiving regular information bulletins, sending your views to your AAG via a blog, or attending meetings to discuss issues that are affecting people with disabilities and their families, visit the www.yoursayaag.org.au website.

Dementia Advocacy Service goes statewide

On 1 June 2009 Advocacy Tasmania's Dementia Advocacy service opened for referrals in the North and North West of the state. Prior to this, the service had been available in the South for 2 years, first as a pilot project and then as an ongoing service funded by the Tasmanian Government Home and Community Care Program (HACC). With additional funding recently received from HACC, Advocacy Tasmania was able to expand the service to ensure statewide availability. For more information go to our Dementia Advocacy service page.
